This isn’t just another dip you stir together in a bowl. This is the Easy 5-Layer Football Field Taco Dip โ€” a recipe that turns the classic seven-layer dip into a touchdown-worthy display. It’s got all the creamy, crunchy, savory, and fresh components you crave, but it’s built to look like a football field.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz can refried beans (traditional or vegetarian style)
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning mix (low-sodium recommended)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat for piping)
  • 8 oz block cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (scallions), green parts only
  • 1 cup fresh pico de gallo or chunky salsa, well-drained
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (for piping yard lines)
  • 1 small plastic football or bell pepper slices cut into football shapes (for decoration)
  • Tortilla chips, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prep the Bean Base: In a medium bowl, combine the can of refried beans with the taco seasoning and 1/4 cup of water. Mix until smooth and well-combined.
  2. Spread the First Layer: Using a spatula, spread the seasoned bean mixture evenly across the bottom of a large platter or baking sheet (9×13-inch).
  3. Make the Creamy Layer: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and 1 cup of sour cream together until completely smooth and fluffy (about 2 minutes with a hand mixer).
  4. Spread the Creamy Layer: Gently spread the cream cheese mixture over the bean layer, dropping spoonfuls first to avoid pulling up the bean layer.
  5. Add the Cheese Layer: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese evenly over the cream cheese layer.
  6. Create the ‘Grass’: In a small bowl, toss together the finely chopped lettuce, cilantro, and green onions. Sprinkle evenly over the entire cheese layer.
  7. Build the End Zones: Using a spoon, carefully create two rectangular ‘end zones’ at opposite ends of the platter by pushing the grass mixture aside. Fill each end zone with the well-drained pico de gallo or salsa.
  8. Pipe the Yard Lines: Spoon the remaining 1/4 cup of sour cream into a small zip-top bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bag. Pipe straight lines across the ‘field’ of grass, starting and stopping at the edge of the end zones (about 5-6 lines). Optionally pipe small numbers in the center.
  9. Add the Final Touch: Place a small plastic football or bell pepper football shapes in the center of the field or on one of the yard lines.
  10. Chill and Serve: Cover the platter loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with a big bowl of sturdy tortilla chips.

Notes

For best results, ensure cream cheese is truly softened. Drain salsa well to prevent sogginess. Use a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off for perfect yard lines. Chill for at least 30 minutes to set layers. Can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance (add sour cream piping and decoration just before serving).
