A fun and festive Halloween guacamole dip shaped like Frankenstein’s monster, made with creamy homemade guacamole and decorated with sour cream, olives, and vegetables. Perfect for parties and guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe avocados
  • 1 medium lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 medium Roma tomato, seeds removed and diced small
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, seeds and membranes removed, minced fine
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 2 black olives, sliced into rounds
  • 2 slices of cucumber or carrot, cut into small rounds
  • 1 small piece of red bell pepper, cut into a small mouth shape
  • Tortilla chips, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients first. Dice the red onion, tomato (remove seeds), jalapeño, and cilantro. Slice olives into rounds. Cut cucumber or carrot into small rounds for eye bolts. Set aside.
  2. Cut and scoop the avocados. Slice each avocado in half lengthwise, twist to separate, remove pit, and scoop flesh into a mixing bowl.
  3. Mash the avocados with a fork or potato masher to desired consistency, leaving some chunks.
  4. Add lime juice immediately and stir to prevent browning.
  5. Mix in diced red onion, tomato, cilantro, jalapeño, salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Stir until combined. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  6. Transfer guacamole to a serving platter or shallow bowl. Spread into a rough rectangle shape (about 6×8 inches) for Frankenstein’s head.
  7. Spoon sour cream into a piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner. Pipe jagged zig-zag lines across the top for hair and sideburns.
  8. Place two olive slices about 2 inches apart in the upper half of the face for eyes. Add cucumber or carrot rounds on each side for eye bolts (optional).
  9. Use the red bell pepper piece to create a mouth—a small straight line with jagged edges.
  10. Pipe small sour cream dots on forehead or cheeks for stitches. Add a small dollop on each olive eye if desired.
  11. Serve immediately. Arrange tortilla chips around the edges, sticking them into the guacamole slightly to create a ‘chip fence’.

Notes

Guacamole is best within an hour of making. To prep ahead, chop vegetables and store separately; mash avocados with lime juice and combine just before serving. For longer freshness, press plastic wrap directly onto guacamole surface before decorating. Use room temperature sour cream for easier piping. If guacamole is too thin, add another mashed avocado; if too thick, add a teaspoon of water or extra lime juice.
