These Easy Spider Cookies with Chocolate Legs are a spooky Halloween treat that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple to make. With a buttery cocoa cookie base and dark chocolate legs, they’re perfect for classroom parties, trunk-or-treat events, or a fun afternoon baking project with kids.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick, 113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (20g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (about 170g) dark chocolate melting wafers
  • 2430 pairs (4860 total) candy eyes

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes with a hand mixer or 3-4 minutes with a wooden spoon. Scrape down the sides halfway through.
  2. Add 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed or stirring gently with a wooden spoon until the flour disappears. The dough will be soft but not sticky. If too sticky, refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This is non-negotiable for thicker, softer cookies.
  6. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each) and roll into balls. Place on prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cookies should look set around the edges but still soft in the center. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Cool completely before adding chocolate legs (about 20 minutes; can speed up in fridge for 10 minutes).
  9. Place 1 cup dark chocolate melting wafers in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring after each, until completely smooth (about 60-80 seconds total). Let cool for 2-3 minutes.
  10. Working with one cookie at a time, hold the cookie by the edge and dip the bottom into the melted chocolate. Drag the chocolate across the cookie in a straight line, creating 4 legs on each side.
  11. Place the cookie on a clean piece of parchment paper. While the chocolate is still wet, press two candy eyes into the chocolate near the top of the cookie.
  12. Repeat with remaining cookies. Work quickly; if chocolate thickens, microwave for 10 seconds.
  13. Place finished spiders in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to set the chocolate completely. Transfer to an airtight container, layering with parchment paper between each layer.

Notes

Don’t skip the chill timeโ€”warm dough spreads into flat cookies. Use a light hand with cocoa; too much makes cookies dry and bitter. Watch chocolate temperature: it should flow like warm honey. Work in batches to keep chocolate at the right temperature. Practice on one cookie first. Keep extra candy eyes handy.
