This quick blood orange Halloween sangria is proof that you don’t need complicated recipes or hours of prep to create something memorable. It’s the drink that saves you when you’ve forgotten about the party, when you’re short on time, or when you just want to show up with something that looks like you tried—even if you didn’t.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot or Tempranillo recommended)
  • 4 blood oranges, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice (unsweetened)
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar (optional)
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: fresh rosemary sprigs or cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions

  1. Chill the wine, pomegranate juice, and sparkling water in the fridge for at least 2 hours before starting.
  2. Wash the blood oranges and slice into thin rounds (about 1/4 inch thick). Remove any seeds.
  3. Place about half the blood orange slices in the bottom of a large pitcher. Gently press them with a spoon to release some juice.
  4. Pour in the entire bottle of red wine, followed by the pomegranate juice and orange liqueur. If using honey or agave, add it now. Stir gently with a wooden spoon for 10-15 slow stirs.
  5. Chill the pitcher in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (up to 24 hours for better flavor).
  6. Just before serving, add the sparkling water and stir once gently. Drop the remaining blood orange slices on top.
  7. Serve over ice, making sure each glass gets at least one blood orange slice.

Notes

Don’t use expensive wine; a $8 bottle works great. Blood oranges vary in color; if pale, add extra pomegranate juice. Make ahead without the fizz up to 24 hours. Use large ice cubes to prevent dilution. Over-stirring can make the sangria cloudy.
