A quick and easy stovetop simmer pot that fills your home with warm, spicy, citrusy holiday aromas using simple ingredients like orange, cranberries, cinnamon, and cloves. Perfect for busy weeknights or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange well under warm water. Slice it into rounds about 1/4-inch thick (about 6-8 slices).
  2. Place the orange slices, cranberries, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves into a medium saucepan. Add optional vanilla or star anise if using.
  3. Pour in 4 cups of water, or enough to just cover the fruit and spices.
  4. Place the pot on the stove over high heat and bring to a boil (3-5 minutes).
  5. As soon as steady bubbles appear, reduce heat to low or medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  6. Let the pot simmer for at least 30 minutes to build aroma, ideally 2-3 hours.
  7. Check the water level every 30-45 minutes and add more water if needed to prevent burning.
  8. Stir gently each time you add water to release fresh scent.
  9. When done, turn off the heat and let the pot cool completely before discarding solids. Do not pour hot liquid down the sink.

Notes

For best results, use low heat to prevent rapid evaporation. Refresh ingredients after 2 hours by adding another orange slice and more cloves. The orange slices will look sad after simmeringโ€”do not eat them as they will taste bitter. Set a timer every 30 minutes to check water level to avoid burning.
